Tobias Frere-Jones was born Tobias Edgar Mallory Jones in New York City in 1970.He is an American type designer who works in New York City. He attended Rhode Island College of Art and Design and graduated from the graphic design department in 1992. After graduating he began working for Front Bureau Inc in Boston. Frere-Jones became a faculty member at the Yale School of Art in 1998.
He created some of the most widely used typefaces, including Interstate, Poynter Oldstyle, Surveyor and Gotham. Gotham is a geometric sans-serif digital typeface. Freer-Jones inspiration for the typeface came from time spent walking block-by-block through Manhattan. He based the font on the lettering seen in older buildings with horizontal crossbars, minimal curves and flat terminal. There is arm-leg connection of “K” in comparison with Anenir. Gotham is widely used for retail publication and experimental purposes. Over 25 years, Tobias Frere-Jones is one of the world’s leading typeface designers.
